With the South Brisbane peninsula's population expected to number over 43,000 residents by 2026 and public spaces becoming more important, the Corporation is planning ahead to ensure that Brisbane people continue to have spaces and places to relax and unwind.
In collaboration with the new Board, work is underway to determine a plan to guide the future development of the South Bank precinct to ensure it remains an outstanding, relevant and delightful place to visit and meets public and commercial expectations, while also staying at the forefront of urban planning by balancing public open space with commercial and residential needs.
Examples of the Corporation's approach to balancing public and commercial needs include the award-winning River Quay, which opened to the public in October 2011. River Quay was built on the former boardwalk site and provides stunning open space along a prime stretch of the Brisbane River.
Grey Street is the place where buildings define the place but the people make the street. Our aim is to work collaboratively with precinct partners to set Grey Street apart from other Australian destinations. Other exciting developments along Grey Street include the expansion of the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC) and construction of the ABC headquarters and Southpoint. Little Stanley Street has become one of Brisbane's premier retail precincts, offering an array of dining and shopping experiences. We will continue to work with our tenants to involve them in the emergence of Little Stanley Street as one of Brisbane's most vibrant and flourishing destinations.
