Right to Information

1. What is right to information

The Right to Information is the Queensland Government's approach to giving the community greater access to information. The Queensland Government has made a commitment to provide access to information held by Government entities unless on balance it is contrary to the public interest to provide that information.

There are a number of ways information is made available to the community under the RTI framework including:

  • Open Data
  • Access to policy documents
  • Publication Scheme
  • Administrative Access
  • Disclosure Logs
  • RTI Access and Amendment

2. Open data

The Queensland Government's Open Data Strategy aims to make as much government data as possible freely available to the public to support the development of innovative solutions and real improvements to the way government services are delivered. Queensland Government datasets can be accessed via the Open Data Portal which provides a searchable catalogue of datasets and resources released openly by Queensland Government agencies, including a wide range of topics and geographic regions within Queensland. Users can search the portal using keywords, refine results using filters, or browse datasets by category.

3. Policy documents

Under the RTI Act, policy documents should be available for inspection or purchase. Contact the SBC if you would like to access SBC policy documents.

4. Publication scheme

The Publication Scheme requirements are generally met through the publication of information on our website.

5. Administrative access

Making an RTI application for access to or amendment of information should be a last resort so if you would like access to information held by the SBC an option might be to ask for that information to be given administratively. You can also ask for your personal information to be updated or amended without having to make a formal RTI request. Contact us to discuss your information requirements and we will advise on the best approach.

6. Disclosure logs

Sometimes agencies make documents that have been previously released under an RTI application available in a disclosure log. This may prevent the need for multiple RTI applications on the same subject, by giving the community access to documents released under RTI and increase the flow of information to the community. Contact the SBC to find out if any of the information you are considering requesting under an RTI is available through a disclosure log.
