Lord Mayor's New Year's Eve Fireworks

The Lord Mayor’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks will be held at South Bank on Tuesday 31 December 2024, the evening features two free spectacular fireworks shows – one at 7.45pm for families and one at midnight for late-night revelers welcoming in the New Year in style.

The best viewing locations at South Bank include the Clem Jones Promenade, the Cultural Forecourt, Riverside Green and River Quay.

Getting here

Due to extensive road closures, public transport is the best way to travel to South Bank for the fireworks. Use Translink’s Journey Planner to plan ahead.

South Bank’s car park will be open on New Year’s Eve. Information about parking rates and how to pre-book parking is available online. Extensive road closures in and around the South Bank precinct and South Brisbane area may cause delays and changes in how you access the car park.


Planned road closures

Road closures will be in place in and around the South Bank precinct, South Brisbane and Brisbane City. The following closures at South Bank are subject to change if required to maintain event safety.

12.30am Friday 27 December to 5pm Wednesday 1 January:

  • Full closure of Little Stanley Street. Access to the South Bank car park will be maintained

6am Tuesday 31 December to 2am Wednesday 1 January:

  • Full closure of Russell Street at Grey Street

4pm Tuesday 31 December to 2am Wednesday 1 January:

  • Full closure of Grey Street from Vulture Street to Peel Street
  • Full closure of Tribune Street, from Merivale Street to Little Stanley Street. Access to the South Bank car park will be maintained via Glenelg Street (entry and exit) and Tribune Street (exit only).
  • Full closure of Ernest Street, from Merivale Street to Little Stanley Street
  • Full closure of Sidon Street to Dock Street. Access for residents will be maintained until 4pm.

Police, traffic controllers and signage will be in place to assist motorists, buses and pedestrians. Diversion routes will be in place, with all detours and diversions clearly signed on the day. For traffic information visit www.QLDtraffic.qld.gov.au or call 13 19 40.

The perimeter of the South Bank precinct will be gated, with 13 entry points shown in the map below. Bag checks will be conducted at entry points to ensure prohibited items are not brough into the event.

Prohibited items and bag checks

The South Bank precinct will be gated for this event, with anyone entering the event on Tuesday 31 December required to undertake a bag check from 10am. To maintain public safety, the following items are not allowed at this major event:

  • Aerosols
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Animals (except assistance dogs)
  • Bikes
  • Boogie boards
  • Drones or remote-control devices
  • Fireworks or explosives
  • Flagpoles & banner poles
  • Hazardous substances
  • Helium balloons
  • Highly flammable substances
  • Illicit drugs, narcotics & stimulants
  • Laser pens & pointers
  • Liquids (including alcohol)
  • Marquees & tents
  • Plastic bottles, cans & glasses
  • Scooters
  • Segways
  • Skateboards
  • Skates
  • Smoke/flame inducing material
  • Weapons & blades
  • Any other object deemed to compromise safety or hard the reputation of the events.

Street Beach and pools closure

To maintain event safety, Streets Beach, the Boat Pool and Aquativity will be closed at 5pm Tuesday 31 December and will reopen at 7am Thursday 1 January.

This temporary closure will support safe crowd management during New Year’s Eve celebrations. All pools are subject to closures at any time at the discretion of Surf Life Saving Queensland and South Bank Corporation.
