Clem Jones Promenade Renewal Project

The Clem Jones Promenade is one of South Bank’s most popular locations, and one of our city’s most well-used river edges with around four million people using the promenade each year.

Due to the age of the promenade, South Bank Corporation is undertaking essential renewal works to ensure it continues to be a central element in Brisbane’s riverfront pedestrian network. South Bank Corporation has engaged Duratec Limited as the design and construct contractor.

Project overview

The Clem Jones Promenade Renewal Project will involve:

  • Repair of the promenade sub-structure (in-river concrete piles and decking units supporting the promenade structure)
  • Replacement of the lower promenade timber decking in front of Streets Beach
  • Replacement of existing pontoons B and C

Project timings

Works will start on 1 October 2024 and continue through to mid-2025, subject to weather and construction conditions.

Works will take place from Monday to Friday, between 7am and 5pm.

Due to the nature of the work taking place in the Brisbane River, works will be influenced by changing tidal conditions. As a result, some work outside of these hours will be required to accommodate tidal shifts.

Project impacts

  • Closure of the lower promenade timber deck area (in front of Streets Beach), however, the main promenade will continue to be open.
  • Increased noise in the immediate area of the works
  • Closure of pontoons B and C to limit recreation water movements in the area to increase safety for river users and the construction team.

South Bank’s River Quay Pontoon (South Bank 3 Ferry Terminal) will remain open and can be booked by commercial operators for 30-minute bookings via our What’s On website. For non-commercial vessels, information about public river and recreation hubs, boat ramps, canoe ramps and pontoons is available via the Brisbane City Council website.
